Axie Infinity Kickstarts Season 20

The PlayToEarn game’s rebalancing efforts for their native token, $SLP takes full effect with the start of Axie Arena Season 20.

20th Axie Arena Season

PlayToEarn blockchain game project, Axie Infinity, has recently announced the start of the 20th edition of their Axie Arena.

With the start of this new season, the new economic rebalancing efforts are now in full swing. The official Axie Infinity twitter account, as well as members of their core team, broke the news on February 9. Andrew Campbell, better known as Zyori, focused on the prize pool for Season 20.

“Axie Season 20 is here! Over $7 million in $AXS prizes spread across 300,000 players. Best of luck to all competitors! Let’s make it a great and memorable season” Zyori  tweeted.

Seven million US Dollars worth of $AXS rewards will be distributed among the top 300,000 players of this season’s Axie Arena. In previous editions of the competitive Axie PvP scene, only the top 1000 players get a share of the $AXS rewards at the end of the season. The increased pool is good news to a player base that has seen a reduced $SLP emission as a result of the economic rebalancing efforts for the game.

GoodBye For Now

$SLP emissions from adventure mode and daily quests have been reduced to zero due to the update. What was once a sure seventy five $SLP gain for players resulted in the inflation of the utility token as 54% of all emissions come from these sources. Aleksander Larsen, better known as Psychout, Axie Infinity’s COO, said in a Discord announcement that the two features has “outlived its purpose”.

“As a first measure to stabilize the economy, we have removed all SLP rewards from adventure mode (this includes the SLP rewards for first-time completion.) Adventure mode was originally conceived as a way for the community to learn how to use their Axies. It has outlived its purpose as a way for people to earn tokens from the game,” Psychout said in the Axie Infintiy Discord. “The daily quest, in principle, was great to encourage people to play everyday but it’s now become a mass emission mechanism for SLP. By removing the daily quest we are able to reduce issuance by around 45 million SLP per day. We love the idea of quests and hope to re-introduce a quest mechanism in the future through Origin, but this will need to come in tandem with new burn mechanisms from new features.”

A Storyline to follow

With the release of Axie Infinity: Origins right around the corner, many members of the community are speculating that the current season might be the last one with the present version of the battle system, making season twenty a coveted title to chase.

Four time Axie Arena winner and defending champion, Indes of Axie.gg, looks to add a fifth title under his belt. Indes is the only four time winner of the Axie Arena competitive PvP season. The winner of the second season of the Axie Arena, Chuck Fresco, also revealed through Axie Tuesday, Axie Infinity’s community spotlight series, that he has been practicing with the current metas of the game as it would be a cool bragging right to say that you’ve won the 2nd and the 20th version of the competitive season. People can’t count out community favorite and METAT8 Esports founder, Elijah, from making a push to the top as well.

Barring any unforeseen extensions, the 20th season of the Axie Arena will last for six weeks and is slated to end on March 22 at 10AM CET
