Any hardware wallet team will now have the chance to access MetaMask’s open QR code standard.
MetaMask Opens Doors Wide for Web3
MetaMask is the chosen route for most people adopting a wallet as they navigate Web3, and they will now be looking to be more accessible than ever to hard wallet users.
The team has officially announced Keystone which is a QR-code-based open-source hardware wallet. Notable aspects of Keystone ensure it uses 100% air-gapped QR code transmissions that are not vulnerable to potential malware infiltration risks.
“We’ve launched an open QR code standard that can be leveraged by any hardware wallet team! Why? Security, transparency, compatibility. Very excited to announce our integration with @KeystoneWallet!” MetaMask explained on its official Twitter account on December 10th.
Keystone also helps ensure a level of transparency for data transmission, through the decoding of content on a QR code that is easily readable. This will mean you will see precisely what the hardware wallet is sending to the Keystone Companion app, ensuring no sensitive data is vulnerable.
Advantages of Latest Move
The team was upfront about what they see as being the three main advantages of using QR code transmission, citing security, transparency, and compatibility:
The use of QR codes focuses on security and means your hardware wallet has no reason to be connected to a computer, therefore allowing for no vulnerability regarding private keys being exploited even when signing transactions. The team was particularly uncomfortable about ‘blind signing’ and for this purpose have adopted a 4-inch touch screen that allows verification of contract addresses and boasts smart contract features.
The team has explained that there is a built-in self-destruct mechanism that triggers upon detecting any hardware disassembly. https://www.youtube.com/embed/1eM53TYG1YA
Keystone’s QR codes are already transparent. This allows users to verify what comes and goes on their hard wallet. With their open-source tool, users know how to decode QR codes, and are able to navigate the software enabling signing off on transactions.
Keystone is already compatible with a host of software wallets and has even integrated with several Dapps like Yearn and Gnosis Safe. Keystone hardware wallet users can now also make use of multi-sig, DeFi, staking, connecting your own node, and even participating on decentralized governance initiatives. This can be achieved without solely relying on the Keystone Companion app.
Most importantly for MetaMask however, this latest move ensures minimal connectivity issues between the device and MetaMask, meaning users may well be likely to pour in.
