Polygon Secures $400 Million Scaling Deal with Mir

The acquisition of Mir will allow Polygon to expand the capabilities of its scaling technologies to the next level.

Polygon Zero with ZK Cryptography

The Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution, Polygon, announced the acquisition of Mir Protocol, a ZK startup, for $400 million on Dec. 9.

Polygon will utilize Mir’s Zero Knowledge (ZK) scaling technology to build Polygon Zero, a highly scalable, Ethereum-compatible ZK rollup. The amount committed to this deal is $100 million and 190 million MATIC tokens. Polygon Zero will be the latest addition to the project’s ecosystem that includes:

Polygon POS

Polygon Nightfall

Polygon Miden

Polygon Avail

Polygon SDK

Polygon Hemez

“We are especially optimistic and focused on ZK-based solutions. We are happy to already have four such efforts under the Polygon umbrella, and even happier that they are already actively collaborating and working towards common goals and vision,” stated Polygon’s official blog elaborating on Polygon Zero. “It is our belief that Polygon now has all the necessary components to become the industry’s leading ZK powerhouse and significantly push the frontiers of innovation in this exciting field.”

The Mir team has also built plonky2, a recursive proofing system based on PLONK and FRI. It can generate recursive proofs in 170 milliseconds, even on a laptop. It could be used for building an Ethereum-compatible ZK virtual machine allowing for the horizontal calling of blockchain networks. Polygon plans to announce Plonky2 in the coming weeks, complemented with benchmarks and explainers.

What is Polygon?

Polygon is an open-source layer-2 solution built by a decentralized team of contributors from all over the world. It is a protocol and a framework for building and connecting Ethereum-compatible blockchain networks. It combines the best features of Ethereum and sovereign blockchains to create a full-fledged multi-chain system.
