Blockchain gaming is the future and the move is sadly a step-back for all of gaming.
Valve Bans Cryptos
Valve updated the Rules and Guidelines on Steam for onboarding new games and specifically noted that no blockchain-based games are allowed. The rule update was clear to rule out all cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs) from a place on its marketplace.
The new thirteenth line to the Steam Rules was first pointed out by @SpacePirate_io, a developer of the game Age of Rust. As a leading PC gaming marketplace, Steam is usually a great proving ground where projects launch. As noted by SpacePirate, the move is a major blow to Age of Rust and blockchain gaming as a whole.
“We chose to be upfront about blockchain gaming & NFTs. As a result, we finally lost the battle with Steam. While I’m disappointed for Age of Rust being removed, the point is more to the fact that Blockchain games as whole are going to be removed. This is setback for all,” wrote @SpacePirate_io on Oct. 14.
Valve supposedly does not want items that hold real-world value on their platform, which draws a hard line in the sand against all blockchain projects. The gaming industry is notoriously stubborn and we could be seeing the beginning of another bifurcation within the industry. As the world of blockchain games grows, the role of gaming and e-sports could dramatically change.
Steam To Continue Important Role?
Gaming has exploded across the blockchain in the past few months and Steam would be foolish to fall behind the latest gaming development. @SpacePirate_io also wrote that they respect Steam’s decision, but there was a tone of hopefulness to the message.
“Steam’s point of view is that items have value and they don’t allow items that can have real-world value on their platform. While I respect their choice, I fundamentally believe that NFTs and blockchain games are the future. It’s why I started this journey with all of you,” continued SpacePirate_io.
The development and proliferation of games are becoming hard to keep up with and the precarious state of blockchain in the United States requires a definitive stance. An article from Verge noted that banning blockchain games could be a precautionary move from the American-based company.
As the obfuscation around blockchain regulation diminishes, hopefully, Steam begins to warm. The marketplace plays an important role in PC gaming and we could see the development of new platforms and marketplaces to fill its capacity if it doesn’t end up holding its weight.
