Major League Soccer Joins the List of Sports to Capitalize on the NFT Craze

The MLS joins the NBA, MLB, UFC and number of NFL players in jumping on the NFT bandwagon.

The NFTs

In an announcement on the official MLS website it was revealed that two marquee matches, featuring four teams, would have accompanying street art-inspired NFTs. The matches which will lead the MLS charge into the NFT phenomenon will be the Portland Timbers vs. LA Galaxy (3:30 pm ET | ABC, ESPN Deportes) and Seattle Sounders vs. Atlanta United (4:30 pm ET | FOX, FOX Deportes).

The MLS have partnered with Secret Walls and bitski to bring these first NFTs to the public, and they anticipate releasing further NFTs in the future.

There will also be a limited-window match-up poster sale, where users will have the opportunity to purchase unique posters involving the matches. The window will last only 90 minutes, meaning that interested fans will need to act quickly in order to acquire the posters.

The sporting world seems to be falling in love with NFTs

The Art

Each of the four artworks is created by a different artist with the Portland Timbers artwork by Mighty Short, the LA Galaxy artwork by Aaron Kai, Seattle Sounders piece by Kyler Martz and the Atlanta United NFT by Paper Frank. All artworks can be purchased by either credit card or Ethereum from the dedicated MLS NFT webpage from bitski. Chris Schlosser, MLS SVP of Media, said the following in regards to the collection:

“The special NFT art collection is the latest evolution of Major League Soccer’s commitment to celebrating the creativity in our sport and the permission to connect soccer with progressive and exciting art experiences. The live art battle, plus the modern take on a matchup poster, helps create a cultural moment that celebrates our League, and the two great MLS matches this weekend.”

The MLS have also taken an environmentally conscious approach to the NFT event, teaming up with aerial.is to ensure the event is carbon neutral.

Concluding Thoughts

The continuing emergence of new participants in the field of NFTs is no bad thing for the wider industry. With a commitment to continue releasing NFT artwork in the future, the MLS will ensure that stateside soccer fans will be exposed to the sector for some time to come. With the NBAUFC and some NFL stars also participating, sports fans will struggle to avoid NFTs and their accompanying artwork. The biggest battle for cryptocurrency and DeFi has always been ‘mainstream adoption’, and NFTs are proving to be a significant weapon in that fight.
