FTX US Plays in DC
FTX US has signed a partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), proprietor of four professional sports teams in the nation’s capital. The deal will make FTX US the official cryptocurrency exchange and Non-Fungible Token (NFT) partner with the Washington DC Wizards men’s basketball team, the Mystics women’s basketball team, the Go-Go basketball team, and the Capitals hockey team.
The multi-year deal announced on December 20 also gives the exchange access to e-sports teams Washington District Gaming and Caps Gaming, as well as the Capital One Arena in DC. The heavy sponsorship of teams in the nation’s capital would appear to be a strategic choice on behalf of the exchange.
“FTX is very much focused on being, you know, the adult in the room, in terms of working with regulators and helping wherever we can to push the industry forward in the right way,” FTX.US Vice President of Business Development Avinash Dabir told CoinDesk in an interview on December 20th. “To be able to have a presence in D.C. in this manner goes hand-in-hand with our desire to work with everyone involved to make sure crypto is done properly.”
Whether the ploy of sponsoring sports teams will win over anyone in the capital’s legislature remains to be seen. For now, athletes in the nation’s capital can look forward to dining out on crypto sponsorship deals.
