BSC Experiences $73k Vyper Attack in the Wake of Curve Finance Exploit

The BNB Smart Chain (BSC) and Vyper Vulnerability

The BNB Smart Chain (BSC) recently fell victim to copycat attacks, exposing a vulnerability in the Vyper programming language. This attack closely resembled the well-known exploit of the Curve Finance defi protocol.

BlockSec’s Findings: $73,000 in Cryptocurrencies Stolen

On July 30, blockchain security firm BlockSec released alarming information that approximately $73,000 worth of cryptocurrencies were stolen from the BSC through three separate exploits.

Mirroring Ethereum’s Curve Finance Exploits

Interestingly, these latest attacks on BSC mirrored the ongoing exploits on Ethereum’s Curve Finance, which had already seen losses surpassing $41 million.

Battle between White Hat and Black Hat Hackers

Following the news of the exploits, the defi community witnessed a fierce battle between white hat and black hat hackers on-chain. Both groups have been actively trying to disrupt each other’s exploit attempts and efforts to recover the stolen funds.

c0ffebabe.eth: A Potential White Hat Hacker

Amidst the chaos, a potential white hat hacker, known as “c0ffebabe.eth,” took action to secure some funds for safekeeping. On July 30, this hacker sent an on-chain message, urging affected protocols to get in touch to coordinate the return of funds.

Positive Developments: Recovery of Funds

To the relief of some victims, c0ffebabe.eth’s wallet successfully returned nearly 2,900 Ether (ETH) worth over $5 million to Curve through a transaction.

Additionally, in another transaction, 1,000 ETH was moved to a newly-created wallet, potentially serving as their cold wallet to secure the recovered funds.

Conclusion

The recent vulnerabilities discovered in the BSC and the subsequent copycat attacks underscore the importance of robust security measures in the cryptocurrency space. The ongoing battle between white hat and black hat hackers demonstrates the need for constant vigilance and collaboration within the defi community to protect users and assets.
