BNB Chain NFT Spotlight: Bitpunks

This spotlight sees the creator of Bitpunks explore the flippability of NFTs, expand on NFT community and much more.

Meet the Bitpunks Creator

The NFT sphere is growing rapidly on BNB Chain. Here we take a look at an NFT project from the BNB Chain that is driving a simple message of rarity and appreciation of art. We sat down with Josef, the creator of Bitpunks. Josef works as a salesman in Germany and discovered a new hobby during the pandemic that he used to help develop what he hails ‘the most flippable’ NFT project on BNB Chain.

Despite having a project inspired by CryptoPunks and LarvaLabs, Josef marks dedication and creativity as core values in the space. He values the appreciation of others and continues to reflect those values in his pursuits.

You can usually catch Josef under the Bitpunks NFT Twitter handle popping into various BNB Chain Twitter Spaces like those hosted by Dehuffski. The Bitpunks launched in January 2022 and minted out in under 2 hours and 15 minutes. You can buy Bitpunks on NFTKey or The Bull Society Marketplace.

Q: What is the origin of Bitpunks? Was it a sudden thought from a dream, or did it develop over time?

A: The project began in August 2021, maybe it was September, but I always tell people it was August.

I learned about the image editing software called MagicaVoxel. I started fooling around making 3D models in bit form. I created one model and showed it to a friend who enjoyed it. This friend of mine advised me to make a collection.

I didn’t set out to create something rare. These BitPunks actually took a long time. But they are just models of the CryptoPunks. There is really no originality in the theory behind my work.

Q: Were there any hiccups in the Bitpunks launch?

A: Yes––at one point, I didn’t save all files as .vox files of the program. The .vox is the save file code for MagicaVoxel, and I could not fix any edits for several of my models.

Well, in the beginning, it took me almost 5 hours to do a single Bitpunk. I guess you could say that is a sort of hiccup, all that time dedication. Now, I can do them much faster.

But one funny story is how we came to meet Fab, the creator of Rareboard. He stalked my wallets on the testnet. He went through and found that I didn’t hide my metadata correctly. He sent me a picture of my BitPunk before it was public. I thought, “No way, how did he get my idea. No way, it cannot be the same!” we were shocked to see how he discovered this. He onboarded himself to the project that way.

The great thing about Fab was he came honestly to show our mistake. Sure he did it kind of as a joke, but it was a big learning experience. He’s now a friend and helps with our project.

“I think utility is not defined in a good way. The utility is really the value defined by the user. I believe the definition of utility is important. For example, a reward token is not really a utility. Utility means more about something in the real world.”

Q: What does it mean to be flippable?

A: Maybe this neologism I’ve created or something. Flippable means to sell at a higher price than invested. Everyone wants an NFT collection that is flippable is what everyone wants. So you can buy an NFT for 0.5 BNB and sell it for 1 BNB. You flipped the NFT. I guess it can also be a verb. It’s, in general, a more positive term, but I guess it could work for something negative.

Q: How would you describe NFTs to an alien?

A: My first instinct was to think it was not possible––Or maybe that Vitalik [Buterin] is an alien, so it would be easy! But if I had to define an NFT, I would say it is a visualization of stored information.

NFTs are more than just thoughts beyond the plain picture. By invoking the word “visualization,” it goes deeper. If you say it is just information stored on-chain, I don’t believe that is enough––the information doesn’t have to have any value.

Q: What is your favorite utility for NFTs in general?

A: I think utility is not defined in a good way. The utility is really the value defined by the user. I believe the definition of utility is important. For example, a reward token is not really a utility. Utility means more about something in the real world.

I spoke with team members at ApeSwap and Liquidity Collectibles, and their advice was very helpful. I purposefully made the Bitpunks utility is low supply––this gives the opportunity to grow the floor. The lower the supply, the faster the floor price will grow. An increase in price is definitely a kind of utility.

Another kind of utility that could be introduced could be something like indexing, but rarity will always be the most important in my mind.

“This was a good rebrand but too late. I really think it was a good idea at its core, but one problem is that everyone will continue to say Binance Smart Chain (BSC) in the short term. The term that people know and are familiar with is BSC.”

Q: As a BSC creator, What do you think of the recent BNB chain rebrand?

A: This was a good rebrand but too late. I really think it was a good idea at its core, but one problem is that everyone will continue to say Binance Smart Chain (BSC) in the short term. The term that people know and are familiar with is BSC. But I have not followed too many of the technicalities. It will not be the BNB Smart Chain will it?

But in general, I believe it is good. It is smart not to be too tied to the name Binance anymore. And I mean this in terms of beyond just the name. It is positive to separate from Binance for decentralization reasons and a multichain future. This helps push the chain in the right direction.

Q: What is the state of NFTs on BNB Chain? Are you bullish/stagnant?

A: I would have to say: difficult. We are entering a difficult phase. On the BNB Chain, there are lots of derivatives in a fucked up way. We have spoken about this at the [BNB Chain] NFT Growth Alliance. We spoke about how this new stuff has no creative value, copies that will just put the Binance logo on random projects and call it new.

There are many good projects, and the copy projects make a bad light and steal the light from the good projects. This can also give people the impression that the BNB Chain is a copycat chain, one that is just full of copy projects. The chain has that reputation in some ways.

But the talent is here on the BNB Chain, and it needs recognition. Recently there have been lots of new faces. The NFT community has really exploded with around 500 active projects that have grown to more than 5,000. The space is growing in numbers, which makes it more attractive for new users and creators.

In the long term, good and bad stuff can both happen. If we think about the name, if the BNB Chain is tied to a name, then it can never be fully decentralized. The new name brings more exposure to the BNB token and is more bullish for the space in general. Of course, it confuses some people, and only time will settle this confusion. Maybe formalization will end with this name change?

Q:Tell me about your connection to the BSC NFT Growth Alliance?

A: Well, firstly, we are going to change the name. We have already decided that. It will become BNB Chain NFT Growth Alliance.

So we are people from across BNB Chain. We are a collection of marketers, creators, leaders of different projects in the space. All these people have an impact on some project in one way or another.

I wasn’t there from exactly the beginning––you should speak to KC if you want to know more about that. I know that it was born from friendships and grew organically within the BNB Chain. It’s more or less a project of leaders working to find a common direction.

“The idea is all about moving the train in the right direction where we can set some standards for the ecosystem, and every project has its place. The project is trying to define a higher purpose beyond just selling NFTs in the space.”

The group has intensified recently, but there is no direct profit for Bitpunks or me because my project launched before it started. For me, it is best to think about it as a connection. It is helping move all the projects in the right direction.

The idea is all about moving the train in the right direction where we can set some standards for the ecosystem, and every project has its place. The project is trying to define a higher purpose beyond just selling NFTs in the space.

Q: How can you describe an NFT community? What makes a positive community?

A: I can say that spontaneous relationships are 100% a thing. In the alliance, there are original players in the community, people who have been around as long as eight or nine months. We are people that know each other.

A positive NFT community is one where friendships are built. The more people who can feel welcome, the more it can grow. What I like about many of these communities is that they feel natural and spontaneous.

What is great about the alliance is we can set a positive goal based on what we want to see in the community. Everyone is hyped and exciting. Again, I would describe it as a train that people can board. A train that different people can get on and off, but the train only moves in one direction: forward.

Q: If could ask CZ one question, what would it be?

A: Hmm…well maybe I would talk about NFTs and mass adoption. But I think it would be most important to ask why he supports Ethereum NFTs more than Binance NFTs?

Did you see the recent Binance tweet that had a graphic with only Ethereum NFTs? I mean, ‘cmon man? How can you do that? I think the tweet has a question or something on that said like ‘Which of these NFTs will you be buying?’ And the answer is none because they are only ETH NFTs. You can’t buy a single one of those with a BEP-20 token. https://cdn.embedly.com/widgets/media.html?type=text%2Fhtml&key=96f1f04c5f4143bcb0f2e68c87d65feb&schema=twitter&url=https%3A//twitter.com/binance/status/1488829701258981383/photo/1&image=https%3A//abs.twimg.com/errors/logo46x38.png

Q: What is next for BitPunks? What is Bitsquads?

A: So, BitSquads is the next project that I am working on. It is a cross-merge of Bitpunks and PancakeSquad NFTs. I chose PancakeSquads because it is the most popular NFT project on the BNB Chain. I suppose this can generate the most volume for a cross-over project like this. I think it has the most potential for this reason.

Q: Is the project approved by PancakeSwap?

A: The project is not approved by Pancakeswap. I don’t believe I need their permission to make NFTs in this case. To be honest, they are not my biggest fan. I have always been a vocal critic of them as well. To me, it won’t matter if they list my project or not.

I am cooperating with members and leaders in my community as well as with PancakeSquad. I am working with some of the biggest holders of PancakeSquads and Bitpunks. I think that is all that matters. I am working with the people who make the communities and the projects function.

Q: What turns you on? Spiritually, emotionally?

A: I would say the first impression. I am someone who will move through a museum very fast. I can be in and out in twenty minutes. It is not that I do not look at the art. I am just not the kind of person to stand and stare. I like how it makes me feel immediately. Then if there is something that catches me and makes me stay, then maybe I will stay and look at the art or whatever it might be again. But the first impression is what always really moves me.

Q: What turns you off?

A: Modern art.  Art has really gone from beauty to shit, you know? Modern art, to me, is just disgusting.

I believe art is objective. It’s not this subjective shit we see nowadays. I believe that beauty and perfection can be defined. Beauty can be something that is classified.

Art is beauty. Do you know that example of the time someone taped the banana to a wall? They called that art. To me that is not art… And remember the one guy who went and ate it?

Well, I guess he found some form of utility…

A: [Laughs]

Q: What job or profession would you like to do other than your own?

A: I would be a Farmer. To me, it is one of the most natural jobs you can find in the world. I was never a farmer or ever lived on a farm, but somehow I feel connected. I had a family of farmers, so I feel connected in that way. I would find the job simple and peaceful.

Q: What job or profession would you not like to do?

A: Nothing––every job has a good side. I guess if I had to choose, it would be something where I am not humiliated. Like a cleaning person where I am cleaning up after other people and picking up their trash. I would not want to have a job where I would feel any humiliation.
