Binance Hires Ex-IRS Agent as Director of Global Suspicious Activity

Days after another important hire, the Binance train rolls on as another important name comes in.

Binance Swoops Former IRS Special Agent

After a top-level hire for its European operations just days ago, Binance announced its latest addition in the guise of Amjad Qaqish, formerly of the IRS.

The announcement was made official on November 5th, with Qaqish’s extensive experience and the pivotal role he’d played for the IRS underlined as an important factor for the decision. Specifically, his experience has involved him working within crypto, which makes him a standout candidate.

“My interest in the cryptocurrency and digital asset industry started many years ago when I first supported IRS investigation of cases involving crypto.” Qaqish explained in the BInance announcement, “I furthered my interest in this field when I subsequently joined IRS CI’s Cyber Crime Unit. We had to learn the crypto industry in order to effectively investigate these cases and that led to an infectious intrigue and fascination with all things crypto.”

Amjad Qaqish boasts over 30 years of service with the IRS, with 23 of those seeing him acting as a special agent in the IRS Criminal Investigation agency. Importantly, he has experience in crypto-related cases involving fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and terrorism financing, which stem from his time as an agent in the IRS CI’s Special Investigative Techniques (SIT) unit, SAR Taskforce, and Cyber Crimes Unit (CCU).

“The speediness of how the crypto market grows means the deterrence of bad actors is critical to the long term success of our industry.” The new hire continued to outline the importance of his own role. “Binance is a market leader and the global community will look up to us. I am pleased to lead a dedicated and professional team to help set standards for compliance practices.”

With the recent Squid game scam debacle, Qaqish’s notions of the motivations of bad actors are absolutely on point, and his know-how and experience could prove to be indispensable to Binance.

We’ll be following closely to see how this latest hire leaves his mark on the important steps Binance is taking toward mass adoption.
