MetaMask Improves Blockchain Literacy
MetaMask has begun implementing several new integrations in its Extension v10.8.0 to help improve smart contract literacy. The first steps in a larger integration called ‘Transaction (TX) Inisght’ are a major breakthrough in assisting users to understand and read blockchain transactions. The new layout will show users in writing, rather than code, the names and details of the contracts the interact with.
The problems that caused the development of such a tool were recently detailed in a Twitter thread on Dec. 16th by G. Nicholas D’Andrea, a leading blockchain engineer at Truffle Suite Consensys, the parent company of MetaMask. D’Andrea recognizes that many security breaches occur on-chain because most users do not know enough code to make educated consent decisions about the myriad transactions processed across blockchains.
“[S]ecurity is enforced through consent. How can you consent to that which you don’t understand?” D’Andrea asks. “If we want to make real progress on this issue, we must amplify these voices and ruthlessly pursue smarter wallet software with better UX [User Experience] patterns.”
The new integrations will translate previously “opaque” transaction codes. D’Andrea detailed in his thread how his team at Truffle Suite worked together with MetaMask to decode the raw transaction data into information that normies could potentially understand. The new TX Insight function will help give users more readable information to improve user security, functionality, and general blockchain interaction.
“Signing a transaction with confidence requires awareness of two elements: (a) you must know with which contract you are interacting, and (b) you must know what operation you are performing via that interaction,” D’Andrea continued.
With the rollout of the Extension v10.8.0, Transaction Insight, already gone underway, D’Andrea, acknowledged several other developers and helpers in his thread. The collective understanding and improvement in blockchain runs deep in this intergration and the gratitude from D’Andrea.
