Tech giant Google appears to be mapping its route into Web3.

Google Ramping up Blockchain Focus

Google has begun constructing a group dedicated to blockchain and related technologies, which a newly appointed executive will lead. 

Several new positions and staff signal a new direction for the tech giant in the news that grabbed the attention of the crypto world on January 19.

“Blockchain and other next-gen distributed computing and data storage technologies”

Engineering Vice President for Alphabet Inc.’s Google will head a unit focused on “blockchain and other next-gen distributed computing and data storage technologies,” according to an email viewed by Bloomberg and reported by Mark Bergen on January 19.

The move will likely excite crypto users at large who will view Google’s involvement as further indication of the direction the tech industry is certain to take. With rumors already in the pipeline from Bitcoin Magazine regarding Google’s plans of developing storage crypto cards, excitement is certainly growing.

Google’s President of Commerce, Bill Ready, had already notified Bloomberg of Google’s intentions and what these recent developments may signal:

“Crypto is something we pay a lot of attention to,” Ready stated for Bloomberg on January 19. “As user demand and merchant demand evolves, we’ll evolve with it.”

New Faces at Google

Shivakumar Venkataraman will lead a new unit closing in on blockchain technology, while former PayPal executive Arnold Goldberg will also come in to run Google’s payments division. 

Shivakumar Venkataraman’s new role will see him utilize a wealth of experience garnered in his previous role conducting published research on the company’s techniques for distributed computing or tying large numbers of machines together in networks. 

Arnold Goldberg, on the other hand, previously served as the chief product architect and general manager at PayPal, leading the company’s core checkout and merchant services businesses. This experience will likely have many wondering just how Google may choose to employ his distinguished expertise.
