Crypto.com Sends Woman AU$10.5M by Mistake

Crypto.com successfully sued a woman for the return of AU$10.5M the exchange mistakenly sent to her. But not before she purchased an AU$1.35M house.

Crypto.com Error in Her Favor

A Melbourne woman, Thevamanogari Manivel, ran out of luck after Crypto.com discovered it had mistakenly given her $10.5 million Australian dollars instead of AU$100 as a refund.

The cryptocurrency exchange made the mistake in May 2021 but didn’t realize it until its annual audit in December 2021. (The disputed amount equates to more than US$7 million.)

Crypto.com then pursued the matter legally by filing a lawsuit with the Victoria Supreme Court. The Australian court reviewed the case and instructed Manivel to pay back the entirety of the funds that Crypto.com mistakenly sent. However, she had already started digging into the “loot” and purchased luxuries like an AU$1.35M five-bedroom mansion.

The court ordered the sale of the property and Manivel to pay the remaining amount or face contempt of court charges. The case was then scheduled to be returned to court in October 2022.

Regarding the matter, Justin Lawrence from Henderson and Ball Lawyers told Australia’s 7NEWS:

“There’s no doubt that if you saw that in your account, you would know it shouldn’t be there, and the onus is actually on you to call the sender and to say look that shouldn’t have come into my account,” he added, “If you’re withholding property of someone else you’re effectively holding property by deception, you’re not entitled to it, you need to give it back.”

Finders keepers? Not in this case.
