Developers have halved the $AXS portion to breeding, but have tripled the $SLP needed to breed Axies.
New Cost To Breed Axies
Popular blockchain game, Axie Infinity, has announced updated breeding costs effective 24 hours after their announcement from Dec. 8th.
Sky Mavis, developers of Axie Infinity, decided to mix things up and adjust the costs of breeding Axies. Deciding on the right ratio of $SLP and $AXS for breeding was always a balancing act with many things being considered. The Game Devs have decided to reduce the $AXS side of the cost to 0.5 per breed but have tripled the $SLP side of the breeding requirement. The adjustment was announced through the official Twitter account of Axie Infinity.
“In 24 hours we will update the breeding fee! The SLP cost per breed will triple. The AXS cost per breed will be halved to 0.5 AXS. Read about the principles and factors we used and examined when making this important decision,” Axie Infinity tweeted.
With long-term community stability at the forefront of the goals, the developers decided to address some short-term issues by rewarding players’ effort into playing the game. The goal was to manage inflation of the resources within the Axieverse, ensure breeding opportunity makes sense with Axie supply growth, and still give utility to their governance token, $AXS. The prices of floor Axies, $SLP, and $AXS were taken into consideration with this update.
Economics is a Balancing Effort
Axie Infinity daily active players skyrocketed in 2021 from around 38,000 in April to around 2.5 million at present. With this tremendous growth, volatility is certainly to be present. This volatility may cause a little bit of confusion within the community with regards to the valuation of their efforts in playing the game.
The team has repeatedly mentioned that $SLP is a product of human effort. Because $SLP is needed to breed new Axies, the Axies themselves are also a product of player effort and skill.
$AXS is the other side of the breeding fee. With the $AXS price increase over the past months, breeders have been hesitant to breed Axies, reducing the game’s ability to avoid future demand shocks from a considerable number of incoming players because of the high $AXS costs attached to the activity. The update hopes to better balance the economy in terms of $SLP burning, Axie supply, and breeder incentive.
